Surface-to-Air Missile System 2K12-2D «Kvadrat-2D»

Upgrade of SAM 2К12М1(2,3) up to the level of SAM 2К12-2D “Kvadrat-2D” is performed to meet the following objectives:

  • Restore service life of the SAM to 15 years by replacement of 99% of old component base with the new one;
  • Increase combat capabilities through application of high performance computers, ability to conduct effective combat operations and destroy all classes of air targets in complex jamming environment;
  • Increase reliability up to 1500 hours of mean time between failures;
  • Reduce power consumption;
  • Reduce the crew;
  • Simplify SAM operation procedures.

Supporting systems allow to significantly increase the performance and operating characteristics of the system.

The communication system helps establish single information field in real time and allows to extend it by connecting the information fields of superior command post and nearby data sensors.

External power supply (optional)

External power supply (EPS) is designed for generation of electric power and power supply to all components of SAM 2K12-2D when it is not possible or inappropriate to use autonomous power supply units.

EPS is a two-axle trailer with two diesel power plants 100 kVA each and a power distribution panel.

System is remotely controlled. EPS is operated by crew of 1.

Benefits of upgraded SAM 2К12М1-2D «Kvadrat-2D»

  • Capability to detect and destroy low-flying targets, cruise missiles, including very low observable (VLO) (“stealth”);
  • Improved operation in jamming conditions, in presence of reflections from underlying surface;
  • Automation of control from command post, automation of detection and tracking, prelaunch preparation and launch of missiles, crew training;
  • Increase of engagement envelope and kill probability due to optimization of signal processing, increased detection and tracking range of low-flying targets;

  • New built-in data recording system to evaluate crew actions and analyse combat results;

Upgraded engagement radar 1S91-2D

  • Replacement of 99% of electronic components with new ones;
  • Solid-state devices built on the most advanced low-noise and digital components;
  • MTBF increase from 50 – 70 hours to 500 – 5000 hours (by 10 – 70 times);
  • Reduction of energy consumption from 62 kW to 28 kW (by 2.2 times). Replacement of gas turbine generator with diesel power plant which significantly increased the service life of the power supply system and the scope of maintenance works is significantly reduced (by 150 times). Maintenance frequency is once per six-month period, only 15 monitored parameters;
  • Reduction of SURN crew from 4 to 3;
  • SURN system can be operated without crew (remote control mode) from remote command and control post;
  • VHF radio communication with a range of 25 – 50 km (determined by takeoff angles) is used in order to transmit/receive data from a superior command post. Air situation data can be received and displayed on the move;
  • Integrated climate control system (air conditioner, heater).

Upgraded TEL 5P25-2D

  • Upgraded guidance electric servo drive of the artillery unit;
  • New digital control system on the basis of industrial computing system;
  • Upgraded missile radar seeker control unit (9V320М);
  • Digital control system ensures TEL subsystems control, continuous monitoring of TEL subsystems operation parameters and displaying of information about subsystems functioning on the control dashboard of TEL, functional check of TEL equipment and missiles.
  • Digital computing system determines predicted target position, rotation angles of the artillery unit and missile seeker antennas, establishes missile-launch clearances.

In combat mode TEL operates without operator (uninhabited mode). However, there is a built-in operator workstation for diagnostics and adjustment with indication of subsystems status.

The gas turbine generator is replaced with diesel power plant significantly increasing service life of the power supply system and reducing fuel consumption.

Data exchange between the reconnaissance and guidance radar and TEL is carried out by wire or radio. SURN and TEL can be separated by up to 1000 m.

Upgraded TEL has the crew of 2: commander and driver mechanic.

Remote command and control post (optional)

Remote command and control post (RCCP) is a battery command post used for remote operation of SAM (up to 1000 m from the reconnaissance and guidance radar). RCCP accommodates the entire crew of the reconnaissance and guidance radar.

Remote command and control post is designed to provide:

  • Protection of SURN crew against High-speed Anti-Radar (HARM) Missiles by way of full remote control from remote workstations;
  • Acquisition and processing of surveillance data from P-18MA/ P-19MA radar types, superior and supporting command posts;
  • Optimal target distribution, operation as a superior command post for a group of several 2K12 SAM systems;
  • Target designation to own reconnaissance and guidance radar or a group of 2K12 Systems.

Remote command post remotely controls 2K12 System from a safe distance (up to 1000 m) increasing survivability against anti-radar missiles. In this configuration the crew of SURN moves to the Remote Command Post. RCCP is installed on truck vehicle chassis and contains operator work-stations, processing servers, communications equipment, two diesel power plants 8 kVA each, climate control system.

Высотомер ПРВ-16МА сопрягается с радиолокационными станциями П-18МА, MARS-L, П-19МА и комплексами средств автоматизации.
